LONDON – Qualcomm Inc. has appointed Matt Grob as its chief technology officer replacing Roberto Padovani who will continue at the company as an executive vice president.

In his expanded role Grob will co-ordinate R&D activity across the company, lead the corporate R&D division and provide oversight to Qualcomm's Corporate Engineering Services team, Qualcomm said. Padovani will continue to support Qualcomm's R&D, standards and emerging technology efforts.

In a statement Paul Jacobs, chairman and CEO of Qualcomm (San Diego, Calif.), praised Grob and his suitability to serve as CTO. Jacobs also said: "For nearly 10 years, Roberto has played a pivotal role in establishing Qualcomm's reputation for technology excellence. We are fortunate that Qualcomm will continue to benefit from his seasoned expertise."

Grob joined Qualcomm in 1991 as an engineer working on modem designs and firmware for government projects. He has worked on early CDMA data services, the Globalstar satellite system and 1x EV-DO wireless internet access. He was promoted to senior vice president of corporate R&D in 2006 and has helped move the company into such areas as augmented reality and wireless charging, Qualcomm said. Grob has more than 60 patents granted in the fields of wireless communication and cellular technology.
